Fillings & Sealants

Fillings repair holes in your teeth called cavities, which result from decay.

They work to stop the decay from spreading and restore your teeth to their original shape and health.

Silver-coloured amalgams were once the most popular type of filling. However, due to their unsightly look and potential to cause cracked teeth, they have rapidly lost favour.

At Tweed District Dental, we no longer do amalgam fillings. Instead, we opt for more modern, natural-looking, tooth-coloured fillings made of plastic composite resin.

The tell-tale signs that you may have a cavity needing a filling are pain or sensitivity in the tooth, especially when you touch it or eat something sweet, hot or cold. There may even be visible evidence of a hole or other markings.

Yet, not all cavities are easy to spot, and some people with them don't feel any pain at all. That's why it is vital to have your teeth checked regularly by an oral health professional.

It might be possible to use a fissure sealant instead of a traditional filling. Fissure sealants are special plastic coatings dentists apply to the naturally-occurring, grooved tops of the back teeth. While mainly used as a preventative measure to stop food and bacteria from building up on these teeth, especially in children, sealants can also be used to treat tiny cavities.

At Tweed District Dental, we specialise in tooth-coloured plastic fillings and fissure sealants.
