Gum Treatment

Periodontal disease (gum disease) affects a large number of people and requires various levels of professional treatment. Two forms of the disease exist. The first and mildest form is gingivitis. It often causes the gums to become swollen and red. People with this condition may also find their gums tend to bleed easily, especially when brushing, flossing or eating hard foods. Luckily, gingivitis can be reversed by practising better oral hygiene at home and regularly going to the dentist.

Gingivitis left untreated, can progress to periodontitis (advanced gum disease). This is a more serious condition, which over time can destroy the bone and tissue supporting your teeth, making them loose and, sometimes, even fall out. Treatment of the disease at this stage involves deep cleaning below and above the gum line and occasionally, antibiotic therapy. Specific lifestyle changes that increase your body’s ability to better cope with the disease may also be recommended. Periodontitis cannot be cured, but it can be controlled with ongoing professional treatment.

At Tweed District Dental, our highly trained dental professionals will check for periodontal disease each time you visit and treat it as needed using the best available methods.
